Captivating, Engaging, and Fun Hawaiian Curriculum

We loved completing the “Hello Hawai’i” curriculum from Story Lark for our one week study of Hawaii. My children loved going on a journey to explore Hawaii with the adorable characters Thaddeus the cat & his tour guide, Crabby. We had a blast as Thaddeus took us to four of the main islands - O’ahu, Kaua’i, Maui, and Hawai’i - and we were amazed to learn that Hawaii is made up of 132 islands! Not only was the story telling captivating for my children, who laughed a lot, learned effortlessly, and enjoyed learning, but I also loved the sidebars that included even more fun facts about each island including the weather, landscapes, culture, and the Hawaiian language. My oldest has been telling everyone we run into about the humuhumunukunukukuapua’a fish & using Hawaiian words all week. Another family favorite was the “Go Poi” game, which was played multiple times every day this week. The activities paired with the daily story are nice in the way I can utilize different parts for the different ages of my children. Both of my kids participated in the speaking, listening, and comprehension activities, while my oldest (first grade) enjoyed most of the writing activities (and the added learning about poems & poem structure that came with it). We used the more advanced writing prompts, such as day 3’s paragraph writing, to guide a drawing and coloring project that went perfect with the curriculum. My children have put Hawaii on our future travel list & I love that this curriculum fostered a love for learning about geography and an excitement to learn about different states. We look forward to utilizing more of these state units in the future in our studies. Overall, this curriculum can be used with a wide range of ages, which is great for homeschooling families! *I received this free unit in exchange for my honest review*

Creative, smart fun to sneak in amazing learning. Kids begged to keep going!

The curriculum uses adorable characters to explore each state. This week, we learned about Hawaii. I supplemented with a globe and beautiful maps book we already had—everything else was from this curriculum. We followed the characters as they traveled through four of the Hawaiian islands, experienced the culture, food, and had the range of experiences. I loved that it had layered text—there were sidebars with more detail, which was fantastic for my older kids while youngers were doing something else. I also love when leveling is possible because kids of different ages are able to experience one curriculum in age-appropriate ways.
There are days of activities provided, and my kids were sooo happy to pick up this up again over multiple sessions. There are cute activities like guessing distances, for example, which prompted some math and estimation. I turned these into a contest: the activity sheet asked how many banana lengths Hawaii was from California. We discussed how to estimate, did some mental math, and had the kids try to guess their best answers.
We learned Hawaiian words, practiced, and then looked up other Hawaiian words we wanted to know. These words kept peeping up in various other activities, which was so fun!
There were lots of discussion around culture, indigenous people and contributions, and food!
Here are the things that shocked me, in a great way:
-After a *full* hour chunk of learning, my kids *actually* begged me to keep going on the lessons. No joke!
-We played the included game TWICE. My kids wanted to keep playing! (And they did without me!!). The games were super creative.
-My kids were throwing around Hawaiian language, culture, foods, in a totally organic way as a result of this curriculum.
-At the end of the lesson, they asked me if this was part of a new curriculum I would use this year covering all of the states (that is the plan, I believe!) -- really hoping it would be!

A Fun Engaging Curriculum!

I had the opportunity to take a peek at STORYLARK ROAD’s geography enrichment curriculum. How I wish I had this when I began homeschooling. Those of you who know me, know that I love engaging my homeschoolers using quality story narratives across all learning domains. That’s what makes STORYLARK ROAD unique. Children will enjoy the daily journal entries from the point of view of humorous, well-traveled, incredibly articulate animal characters. Home educators will love the step-by-step well-designed daily guides that cover little-known fun facts about our fifty states. I fell in love with Thaddeus the cat, whose unit on Hawai’i is so fun. (Did you know that this state is spelled with an “okina,” the 13th letter in the Hawaiian alphabet, and that well-traveled cats must keep journals? I learned why from Thaddeus.) So engaging!

Hit the Road with US Geography!

Our Hit the Road Geography digital state units use engaging stories, hands-on activities, and writing prompts to help make teaching fun, memorable, and easy to teach.

Individual state units feature journal entries, reflection sheets, writing assignments, and comprehension questions. The journals pair perfectly with the included hands-on activities like science experiments, games, recipes, and make-your-own booklets.

Each state unit guides young learners on a story-driven road trip through one of the U.S. states. Students discover the geography of each state through the humorous journal entries of Thaddeus, our traveling cat.

Thaddeus’s adventures take him on a geographical journey in which he …

  • climbs extinct volcanoes and snorkels coral reefs in Hawai‘i
  • explores California’s coastline, deserts, and towering redwoods
  • skis the slopes of Utah and floats in its salty lakes
  • travels across the Kansas plains to explore what makes a prairie unique

  • and much more!

With rich storytelling and diverse terrain to explore, each state unit offers the perfect mix of facts and fun to spark a lifelong curiosity about geography.

Take learning on the road!

Our state units bring the journey to life through fun, hands-on learning. From science experiments and creative writing to games, recipes, and map skills, each activity deepens understanding of key geography concepts in a playful, memorable way.

Hit the Road Geography is a 180-day elementary curriculum divided into four units, each with a story-based Journals book and a companion Activities book. Together, they take students on a playful road trip through all 50 states—led by Thaddeus, a hilariously charming traveling cat. Through vivid journal entries and engaging activities, learners explore landmarks, landforms, and natural wonders as if they’re visiting each place in person. (See Thaddeus's Travel Route for the list of states in Units 1-4.)

Blending rich storytelling with activities, writing, and comprehension questions, this curriculum helps students:

  • Understand U.S. geography, landforms, and ecosystems
  • Explore cultural history, early settlers, and Indigenous peoples
  • Strengthen listening, speaking, and writing skills
  • Practice critical thinking through open-ended prompts
  • Reinforce concepts with fun, hands-on activities

By traveling alongside Thaddeus, students gain key knowledge and grow a lasting curiosity about the world around them.

What makes Hit the Road Geography special?

With all the choices out there, choosing a homeschool geography curriculum can be daunting. That’s why Storylark Road created a unique approach to geography that stands out from the crowd!

What’s our secret? Story-based learning! Our Hit the Road Geography US geography curriculum turns United States geography into a subject your student will love!

Learn more about what makes the best United States geography curriculum and what sets Hit the Road Geography apart from the rest.

Will you creating all 50 states?

Yes, we will! Thaddeus, our traveling cat, will be exploring all 50 states following a specific travel route. We're working hard to get these completed as quickly as possible while still maintaining our high quality standards. We can't wait to share them with you!

How many days of activities are there for each state?

Each state features 3 or 4 journal entries with paired activities, reflection questions, and writing prompts for each day. The complete curriculum is designed to cover 180 days, aligning with a typical school year.

Do you have to complete the states in any particular order?

Our digital individual state units can be used in our established story order or independently. Some families like to study just their home state or use the program for targeted studies, so we will continue to offer all states individually. After all the states in a unit are complete, they are offered digitally at a discounted bundle price. See our Unit 1 bundle (first 10 states)!

What order are the states taught in?

Thaddeus, our adventurous traveling cat, begins his journey in Hawai'i and then continues across the United States in a thoughtful order just like a real road trip. By moving from one neighboring state to the next, students can see how geography fits together in a connected way, making it easier to understand and remember.

For a map of the full route and a listing of states by unit, see Thaddeus's Travel Route.

What age range is Hit the Road Geography designed for?

Hit the Road Geography is a flexible, open-and-go curriculum designed for grades 2-6. Younger students may need more guidance reading journal entries and completing activities, whereas older students could study more independently.
